A broken tooth is a cracked tooth. The crack can be on the biting surface, in the outer enamel, or you may have a fully split tooth. It is also possible that the tooth could be cracked in several places. The cracks could cause the tooth to be in several pieces. In fact, if large pieces have cracked and are separated from the rest of the tooth, you may need to have the tooth extracted.
