How Multiple Sclerosis Can Affect Your Oral Health

A woman is getting her teeth examined by a dentist.

Because MS (multiple sclerosis) is a neurological disorder, most people don’t realize that it also affects oral health. Since MS can affect motor function and coordination, it can impede proper oral hygiene.

Because oral health has been linked to so many inflammatory diseases, like diabetes and heart disease, it is important to find ways to keep your mouth, teeth, and gums in good condition.

Follow these tips from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society:

  1. Use tools that make it easier to brush and floss, such as flossing picks and thicker-handled toothbrushes or modifiers to make the handle easier to grip. Examples include modifiers you can purchase, a washcloth, or a tennis ball with a slit cut for the handle.
  2. Try using a Phillips Sonicare toothbrush, or other electric toothbrush with the same shape toothbrush head.
  3. Try wearing a weighted glove while brushing, to help control the tremors.
  4. Sit or lay down if standing to brush makes you too tired.
  5. For dry mouth, use a humidifier at night, use products that are designed to help moisten your mouth such as Biotene, and avoid things that dry your mouth, such as alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco.
  6. Consider a fluoride treatment from your dentist or a prescription-strength fluoride toothpaste to help remineralize your teeth.

With just a few changes to your routine, it is possible to maintain healthy oral hygiene still. Contact experienced and skilled Las Vegas dentist for further consultation.
