How Gargling Improves Your Oral Health

Gargling with saltwater helps to remove the buildup of mucus in your respiratory tract and nasal cavity. Warm saltwater, gargled for a few minutes in the back of your throat, decreases inflammation and can relieve the irritation of a sore throat. Additionally, gargling flushes out unwanted bacteria and viruses left in your mouth and throat.

Not only that, but it is also kind of fun to do. Add a teaspoon of salt to a mug of warm water and stir it around. Take a swig of the warm saltwater, hold it in your mouth, and tilt your head back and make primitive bubbling and gurgling sounds. Do not laugh too hard though, or you may just spit it all out on the mirror! It is easy to gargle, and it improves your oral health too.

Gargling Saltwater Each Day Can Improve Your Oral Health

Many people gargle to soothe a sore throat. Did you know that gargling with salt water may help reduce the severity of other infections as well? Both viral and bacterial infections can be prevented to some extent when the patient chooses to gargle with saltwater as gargling can draw out water and bacteria while still protecting the gums. Gargling may be effective for improving gingivitis, periodontitis, and cavities. The reason these symptoms subside is that the saltwater reduces the inflammation in your mouth. Gargling daily can improve your oral health.

Better Oral Health May Mean Gargling More Often

While gargling benefits your mouth and can make even the sternest person giggle, it is also important to maintain good daily oral hygiene practices. Daily brushing, flossing, and rinsing will protect your teeth and gums as well. Schedule your next appointment with our expert and qualified dentists to have a professional cleaning and exam.
