Young man with handsome smile on blue background after his dental bonding treatment at Joshua M. Ignatowicz DMD & Associates.Dental bonding, or tooth bonding, provides a cost-effective way to restore the look and function of a chipped or cracked tooth. This is also useful for correcting minor misalignment as well. Bonding provides a nice alternative to braces or aligners in these cases. Bonding can also be used to treat cavities and gum recession pain. There are several types of tooth bonding, but they all utilize a composite resin material which matches the shade of your natural tooth. We have various bonding treatment options available at Joshua M. Ignatowicz DMD & Associates.

Types of Dental Bonding

There are two main types of tooth bonding; direct and indirect dental bonding. Direct bonding provides a quick fix for tooth damage and decay within a single office visit. Indirect bonding takes place over two appointments.

Some examples of tooth bonding include composite dental bonding and composite veneer bonding. Regular composite dental bonding is used when filling cavities. Composite veneer bonding is used when the patient has requested dental veneers, which is strictly a cosmetic procedure.

Dental Bonding Procedure

The exact procedure depends on the type of bonding you receive. For direct dental bonding, our dentist applies the composite resin on the same day that your condition is treated. For indirect dental bonding, at the first appointment, our dentist will get a mold of your tooth and send it to a dental lab. The lab then crafts your custom dental filling or dental inlay. At the second appointment, our dentist uses composite resin to place your filling or dental inlay.

Prior to the bonding procedure, your tooth may need to be prepared. This would include drilling out any decay, treating an injury, and filing to prepare it for the veneer attachment. Should you ever need these procedures, we would provide anesthesia to ensure your comfort.

Once the composite resin is applied to your tooth, our dentist uses a high-intensity light to instantly harden the material. We then finish by shaping the bond to ensure it matches your tooth. In general, bonding procedures typically last between thirty and sixty minutes. You may need to receive new tooth bonds in the future if the material does wear down with time.

Caring for a Bonded Tooth

You will still need to maintain good oral care if you wanted the bonded material to last. We will explain this in further detail at your appointment. This maintenance would include diet changes, quitting smoking, avoiding excessive chewing or biting, and wearing a nightguard if you grind your teeth.

Regarding diet changes, our dentist recommends cutting out red wine, tea, coffee, and dark colored fruits as these have pigments which can change the color of your teeth. In turn, the composite resin would no longer match the shade of your teeth. Smoking increases your risk of various dental diseases as well as oral cancer. Chewing on your fingernails and other hard objects can damage your teeth and the tooth bond. Grinding your teeth at night can also wear down the material. Nightguards help protect against this by creating a barrier between the top and bottom teeth.
