Dental crowns can be used to save and protect your teeth when they have been
damaged. If you aren’t sure what crowns are, or how dentists use them in their practices, our friendly team at Joshua M. Ignatowicz DMD & Associates can help get you the information you are searching for.

Dental Crown Uses

Most importantly, crowns are used as a form of protection for your teeth. For example, tooth decay may cause the need for drilling or tooth extraction. Should this occur, your tooth and its inner workings would be left exposed. This would not only be painful, but it would also leave your tooth susceptible to further infection and damage. Crowns are, luckily, applied following these procedures to protect your tooth as well as restore its function.

Crowns can also be used in combination with other restorative dental treatments, such as bridges. Crowns can fill in gaps between your teeth, which improves function as well as appearance. Crowns today are able to look very similar to natural teeth, so they are often used for cosmetic purposes.

Available Types And Materials

There are a few materials that have been used to produce crowns. Some are more aesthetically pleasing while the others tend to be much more durable. As you can imagine, the specific material used is dependent upon the intended function of that tooth. If it is a tooth used in chewing, then a stronger material is recommended. Front teeth are not subject to as much impact, so a natural appearance is more important here.

Some of the materials that do not blend with teeth are gold, amalgam, zirconia, and other base metals. These offer more durability but are not the same color as natural teeth. On the other hand, porcelain, glass, and ceramic crowns are more aesthetically appealing, but are not as strong. Sometimes, you can get a combination of both, such as porcelain fused to a metal. These would offer the stability of metal crowns with the visual appeal of porcelain. Dental composite, which is a synthetic resin, can be used for those with sensitivities to metals, ceramic, or porcelain. These are the least durable, but they do look very similar to natural teeth.

Dental Crown Procedure

Your first appointment is mainly about diagnostics and consultation. Our dentist will examine your teeth and take dental x-rays. They will also get an impression of your tooth, which our dental lab uses to mold your permanent crown. At this point, our dentist will also explain the available materials and help you decide which is the best option.

Once the diagnostic and consultation is complete, still during the first appointment, our dentist will do some reshaping of your tooth to prepare it for the crown. They will also place a temporary crown to protect your tooth in the meantime.

After we receive your permanent crown, you will come in for application. Our dentist will confirm that it is the right color and fit for your mouth and then place it using a dental cement.

What Are The Benefits Of A Crown?

There are several benefits to crowns in dentistry. If you are having pain or discomfort due to a damaged or diseased tooth, crowns can cover and protect your tooth, which relieves your pain. Crowns also restore a tooth to its former beauty if it has become discolored due to an accident or illness. Crowns are often used as a restorative dental procedure, such as a root canal.

When Would You Need A Dental Crown?

Crowns often cover and protect a tooth after a root canal. During a root canal, dentists clean out an infected tooth and treat it for a bacterial infection. The tooth pulp, which is the inside of your tooth, is removed and replaced with antibiotics and filler, which saves the tooth. But because the tooth is weak, a crown covers it to protect it from any further damage.

You might also need a dental crown for a cracked, chipped or damaged tooth. Many adults have crowns because they chipped or cracked a tooth by biting down on something hard, for example. Crowns have been used to cover a discolored tooth as well so that the tooth is the same color as the rest of your teeth in your mouth.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

If you take care of your teeth, a crowned tooth can last a lifetime. In fact, the lifespan of most crowns that are well taken care of is 25 to 30 years, which may mean you’ll never have to crown that tooth again. However, just like regular teeth, crowns can break, crack, or chip and you’ll need another one in place of it.

What Are Crowns Made Of?

Usually, crowns are made of porcelain over a metal cap. Dentists have used porcelain for years because it looks and feels much like a real tooth. The metal cap gives the tooth extra protection. Sometimes, crowns are made of resin, and they can also be made of gold or silver, but porcelain or ceramic crowns are most often used.

Do Dental Crowns Hurt?

Dental crowns do not hurt at all. The dentist will trim your tooth a bit, and cement the porcelain crown on top of it. If you are worried about your pain tolerance, however, you should discuss that with the dentist ahead of time.

Can You Get A Crown Without A Tooth?

If your tooth is too badly damaged, placing a crown won’t work. However, the professional dentist has other options, such as implants, to replace that damaged or diseased tooth.
