Clear aligners are a type of dental aligner used by both teenage and adult patients. About 8 million people, 1.4 million being teenagers, have used this orthodontic product. These are preferred by many of our patients over other alignment treatments because they are clear, and therefore hard to notice, as well as removable. So, they do not negatively affect the appearance of your smile. Our clear aligners are manufactured using in-house 3D printing technology and software. We can provide additional product information at Joshua M. Ignatowicz DMD & Associates.
Clear aligner treatment is fully customized for you. This process starts with a consultation with our dentist. At this appointment, our dentist will discuss a treatment plan and take digital images of your tooth structure. These images are used to craft a custom aligner for you. It is also common for patients to receive a professional cleaning and examination prior to the treatment beginning.
Clear aligner treatment is different for everyone, so the exact timeline will vary case by case. In general, treatment usually takes about twelve to eighteen months from start to finish. Some people will begin seeing results within weeks, though. Others can complete treatment within six months.
No matter how long the treatment lasts, your aligners will need to be switched out frequently. Our dentist will give you more specific dates when you begin your treatment. Most cases require the aligners to be switched every week or every two weeks. Clear aligners will need to be worn between twenty and twenty-two hours per day, so you will wear it while you are asleep. You will remove them temporarily to eat, drink, brush, and floss. Some people do also choose to remove them for special occasions and playing a sport. As long as you wear them for the required number of hours each day, your treatment should be successful.
In addition to the aligner swaps, you will also need to come in for frequent checkups so that we can ensure your treatment is working properly. Most patients receive checkups every four to six weeks.
Clear aligner treatment is available for both your top and bottom teeth. Again, your specific treatment plan will be designed by our dentist after consultation and digital imaging.
Following treatment, our dentist may recommend that you wear a retainer to prevent teeth shifting. These are generally only worn overnight, but our dentist will specify this at the conclusion of your clear aligner treatment.
Clear Aligner Maintenance
You should never use hot water to clean your clear aligners. The heat can warp the plastic, drastically affecting your treatment outcome. Instead, clean them using a toothbrush and toothpaste and rinse them using lukewarm water.
Brush your teeth after each meal before you put your clear aligners back in. Food residue can stain the aligners, making them much more noticeable. In addition, any debris trapped by these aligners can cause bacteria build-up and tooth decay. To begin your clear aligner treatment, call Joshua M. Ignatowicz DMD & Associates at 725-257-2220 now.
