Dental Teeth Cleaning
Having your teeth cleaned professionally is a necessary addition to your oral hygiene routine. Many people believe that brushing and flossing daily is enough to keep their teeth healthy. While these activities are also very important, dental cleanings provided by our professionals at Joshua M. Ignatowicz DMD & Associates are essential in maintaining long term oral health. Professional cleanings help prevent many oral health diseases and give our dentist a chance to find issues of which you may not have been aware.
Dental Cleanings Are Critical In Maintaining Your Health
Our dentists are specially trained to notice oral health problems that you would not be able to see on your own. Brushing and flossing your teeth every day is, of course, critical for your dental hygiene. But this can only take care of so much. Plaque and tartar can still build up over time, leading to gum disease that also leaves you at risk for many other types of health concerns. Cleanings should be done at our office every six months to ensure that your teeth are perfectly healthy and rid of debris.
How Dental Cleanings Work
Before you meet with our dentist, our dental hygienist will meet with you to discuss any updates or concerns you may have. Then will then use a dental scaler to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and gumline. Scalers have a pointed tip that allows our dental hygienists to scrape any of this debris away from your teeth. You may hear this scraping sound as they are scaling your teeth, but this is totally normal.
Once scaling is complete, our dental hygienist will brush your teeth using an electric toothbrush specially designed for use at our dental office. This toothbrush has a circular tip that allows our dental hygienists to brush each one of your teeth individually, so that we can be sure nothing is missed. We use a toothpaste that has a gritty texture, which helps to polish your teeth as well as clean them. The texture is the only difference you would notice from the toothpaste you use at home. Our toothpaste smells and tastes the same as ones commonly used by our patients, such as a mint flavor. Our hygienist will apply the toothpaste to each individual tooth and then rinse them using a water syringe and a saliva ejector, which sucks up the liquid.
The last step of your cleaning is flossing. Our dental hygienist will use regular dental floss to clean in between each of your teeth. This is similar to what you would use at home. You can also rinse your mouth once the cleaning is complete, to ensure that all debris has been removed.
Dental Exam and Other Tests
After our dental hygienist has properly cleaned your teeth, you will meet with our dentist who performs a routine dental exam. They may also take x-rays or perform other routine tests to check for maldevelopment or any underlying issues. You will also receive an oral cancer screening at this time, which is provided to all of our patients as a precaution. To schedule your dental cleaning and exam, call Joshua M.
