Visiting the dentist is a big deal for children, and it can seem like something to dread if they aren’t used to going. This is why we recommend that parents start taking their kids at an early age, so the child becomes accustomed to what happens during a visit.

Choosing A Dentist For Your Child’s First Visit

When choosing a dentist for your child, you want to ensure that the office is reputable and has experience with children. If you are not sure which office to go with, ask your pediatrician for a recommendation. Another great place to check is the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s website.

Preparing For The First Dental Visit

Make sure to schedule a check-up appointment with the dentist at least six months before their first visit. This should be done so that any necessary fillings or cleanings can take place before your child’s first visit as an extra precaution. In the weeks leading up to your scheduled date, you will want to explain what will happen during this visit and why they need to go through with it.

At-Home Practice

You can help prepare your child for their dental visit by practicing at home. This includes letting them sit in a chair and look in a mirror and using a toothbrush and water to simulate the cleaning process. You can also purchase children’s books about going to the dentist to know what will happen when they arrive.

Discuss Expectations

It is important to have an open discussion with your child about their upcoming dental visit. This way, they will know what to expect and will not be scared or anxious when it comes time for them to go. Remember that children are more likely to listen and cooperate if they understand why something needs to be done.

Teach Your Child Some Popular Dental Songs

Songs are a great way to help children learn and remember things, so it should come as no surprise that there are several tunes out there about dental care. Some popular ones include “Brush Your Teeth” and “The ABCs of Dental Health.” You can find these songs on YouTube or purchase an album specifically for this purpose.
